The range of scientific activities at the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland/ HIPS comprises genetic and genome-analytic methods for optimizing natural product producers and lead compounds as well as methodologies to improve the transportation of pharmaceutical agents to their target. The combination of the knowledge on infectious diseases and the pharmaceutical research of Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research/ HZI and HIPS takes a unique position in Germany and Europe, especially regarding the development of anti-infectives. The complementary expertise allows concerted and synchronous approaches to the discovery and mining of novel producers of potential drugs, their rational improvement and bioprofiling, as well as their optimal formulation. This greatly enhances the chance of identifying and utilizing novel natural products, and accelerates their advancement to clinical studies. The combined research activities and experiences of the scientists at HIPS, HZI and further regional cooperation institutes in drug development allow for the complete coverage in drug development from drug discovery to clinical phase IIa studies. A successful implementation of translational research is thus achieved.
The main focus of the department “Drug Delivery” under the direction of Prof. Dr. Claus-Michael Lehr is, on the one hand, on the exploration of biological barriers themselves. On the other hand, a major approach consists in developing appropriate carrier systems that are capable of crossing these barriers and deliver the active molecule to the target. Furthermore, the department expands this approach by creating new experimental models of higher sophistication and relevance for investigating the mechanisms, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. In parallel, the nanotechnology platform is to be advanced and broadened in terms of formulating multifunctional nanocarriers that allow tracking of the carriers, targeting to the site of action and release of the payload in a controllable manner in both the model as well as the organism. Last but not least the carrier systems are safely biodegraded and excreted from the body.
In the context of a third party funded project, the Department Drug Delivery is looking for a
PhD Candidate
This project is funded by the German-Israeli foundation for Scientific Research and Development. It aims at the establishment of a novel in vitro model of the deep lung based on a lab-on-chip approach. The system will then be applied for the analysis of transport processes at the air-blood barrier as well as for testing of advanced inhaled aerosol therapeutics.
This interdisciplinary project will combine engineering, cell biology and material science. Knowhow and experience in cell culture are beneficial. Moreover, expertise in the field of aerosol technology is helpful.
Team work and excellent communication capabilities in English language are pivotal, because the candidate will work within an international consortium and get involved in project planning, implementation and reporting. Sound knowledge of German language is of high advantage.
Qualifications: University degree in biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, pharmacy or related life science discipline is mandatory.
