PhD-Position - Structural biochemistry of proteins in the c-di-AMP pathway

FIELD OF WORK
We aim to structurally analyse processes involved in the bacterial c-di-AMP signalling pathway. C-di-AMP is the only known essential bacterial second messenger so far and occurs in a variety of bacteria, lots of them being pathogenic. The levels of c-di-AMP in the cells need to be tightly regulated, as changes in concentration lead to dramatic effects for the viability of the cells and also susceptibility against antibiotics. This renders c-di-AMP signalling an interesting target for antimicrobial therapy.     
The designated project is aimed to structurally and biochemically analyse proteins in c-di-AMP degradation steps. Besides biochemical and biophysical methods we use X-ray crystallography, Small-angle X-ray Scattering and (if applicable) (cryo-) Electron microscopy for the structural analysis of proteins and complexes. 


YOUR PROFILE
We are looking for talented individuals who are excited about research in a competitive area. The applicant should hold an excellent Masters’ or Diploma degree in biochemistry, biophysics or a related area. Previous experience in molecular biology, protein expression, purification and characterization, and application of biophysical/structural methods is a plus.

We offer a stimulating atmosphere in the Gene Center of the LMU Munich with excellent scientific working conditions and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. The position is embedded into the  Priority Programme “Nucleotide Second Messenger Signaling in Bacteria” funded by the German Research Council (DFG Schwerpunktprogramm 1879 ). The PhD-student can additionally be associated to the GRK1721 research training group (further information on the GRK1721 see: www.grk1721.genzentrum.lmu.de)
The position is initially funded for 36 months.
